My stepdaughter Sara and her husband Alan became parents last night, and we visited them in the hospital today. I’m technically a grandfather now.
It’s official. I’m old. 😀

A few days ago, one of my customers gifted me with a box of Defiance Games marines, and they showed up on our doorstep this morning. Of course, I had to open the box and have a peek early.
I’ve always had a thing for plastic figures. Part of it is because they’re easier to convert, part of it is because they remind me of the 1:72 scale model soldiers I used to collect when I was a kid, and they’re easier to clean up and assemble. So whenever I have a choice, I tend to go for plastic over metal.
These figures are cast in a pretty hard plastic, and each sprue yields enough components to build 2 figures.
My first impression was that the tooling process didn’t do the parts any favors, since a lot of the detail is a little soft and indistinct. In this regard, they remind me a bit of the old Space Rangers plastic armored troopers (now sold by EM-4 Miniatures) that I had back in the 1990s. My follow-on thought, however, was that they’re better than some people give them credit for. I mean, very few things still look good when blown up to 8000% of their actual size, and these figures look significantly better in tablevision than they do in photographs.
There are 3 leg sets, 2 torsos, 4 25mm round bases, 2 open faced helmets, 2 closed face helmets, one bare head, one head in a cap, a backpack, a right arm holding a carbine with vertical foregrip, 2 right arms holding rifles, a right arm holding a rifle with attached grenade launcher, a right arm holding a SAW with an attached grenade launcher, 4 left arms, and 6 belt pouches.
The weapons are interesting in that they look more realistic than a lot of other offerings on the market, and yet there’s a hint of cargo cult about them. For example, they’re liberally festooned with Picatinny rails, but there aren’t any iron sights, optics, or any other rail accessories, so it’s almost as if the sculptor or concept artist just thought rails were there to look cool.
That said, I really like their size relative to the figures, and they look nice. They’d look even nicer if the sculptor had added at least some sort of ACOG or ELCAN style sight to the upper rail.
The SAW is an ergonomic disaster with the grenade launcher attached to it, so the first thing I did was cut off the grenade launcher to see how it looked. That was a huge improvement, although I wish the sculptor had kept the front horizontal grip, as shown below:
That wasn’t a big problem, however, since I was able to use one of the rifle-carrying left arms to hold up the modified SAW. The end result looks okay, but I’m still torn. On one hand, I think it would look more ergonomically sound if I just cut the right arm off and grafted the SAW onto one of the rifle-carrying arms like a M249, but on the other hand, I’m thinking about making a sling for it and seeing how that turns out because I like the smartgun-style hold.
Speaking of which, I built 4 guys:
I gave them all caps and backpacks when I first built them, but I suddenly changed my mind about 10 minutes ago and replaced the heads with the open-faced helmets with visors down. I’ll explain why later.
The first time I saw these helmets up close, the thought that leapt to mind was “That looks like something Crye Precision would come up with”, and sure enough, have a look at this:
I’m ambivalent about the fully enclosed helmets because I think they would look much better with long sleeves and gloves than with short sleeves. The bare head is something I might use once or twice. I like the caps and the open-faced visored helmets the most.
Given how the box contents break down, I’m probably going to end up with 12 guys done up in full gear with rucks. The rest of them will get the carbines and be used as dismounted vehicle crew, lightly equipped scouts, or something like that.
I like these figures. I’m looking forward to painting some of them this weekend!
Both of my hands are very nearly at 100% again after spending yesterday and today recovering from the dog bites. The pain is almost nonexistent. There’s just a slight twinge when I move my right thumb. My dexterity is still not all the way back, but I’m otherwise fully functional. Which is great, because it means I can get back to work without making anything worse. 😀
The doggy drama isn’t over with yet, though. Earlier today, we’d put the dog out in the backyard for a little while, and when I went out to bring her back in, she was gone. I was flummoxed because there aren’t any holes in the fence and the little beast lacks two of the necessary attributes for easily opening and closing gates: opposable thumbs and height. So, I went all over the place looking for her in case she’d somehow managed to phase through the fence, and I came to the conclusion pretty quickly that someone had deliberately taken the dog from out of our backyard.
So I messaged Mrs E and told her somebody’d pinched the dog. She called the church volunteer who was dealing with our neighbor’s financial and medical needs, and he told her the dog was with him at the nursing home. Apparently, our neighbor’s sister in law just brazenly barged into our backyard and took the dog with her for a visit without so much as leaving a note on the back door.
I was pretty pissed about it. No, I don’t particularly like that dog, but still. I was responsible for her, I’m highly territorial, and I resent the fact that I wasted 45 minutes running all over the place because some bulbous, inconsiderate clownshoe couldn’t be bothered to take 30 seconds to leave a quick note letting me know that the dog was OK and with her owner.
The little beast is back here now, safe and sound. I don’t know whether to be relieved or distraught about it, to be honest. 😆
Back to work for me. 🙂
I don’t care what anyone says, that’s a job.
Mrs E got hired at a nursing home a little while back for a full-time nursing position, so all the household chores and stuff moved over to my plate. So far, I’ve done these things in the last 8 hours:
Yesterday, I vacuumed the place and squared away the living room, then cut the housekeeping short to run errands with Mrs E. Tomorrow I’ve got another large chunk to cross off my to-do list.
That’s nothing to a real housewife. They take care of kids, they go grocery shopping, run errands, clean up after everybody else, and they cook 3 meals a day as opposed to 1. Day in and day out. And they don’t even get paid for it. I’m not a stranger to this, but the last time I was the Strangely Masculine Housewife of the family was…yeah, 2002. I’d forgotten what a job it was.
So, this post is for all of you full-time housewives and househusbands out there. In case anyone hasn’t told you this lately, thanks for keeping households all over the world running smoothly.
Now I gotta go get out of this French maid outfit. Fishnets chafe.
Just got back home. I’m still a wreck.
I didn’t want to bury Bug in the backyard of a rental property that we’re not even going to be living in a year from now, and we didn’t want to dispose of her like she was garbage or something. I don’t even know how to explain it, it’s just…I wanted something better than that for her.
We made arrangements for her to be cremated and took her in late this morning. We’re picking her ashes up tomorrow afternoon. When we buy a home of our own in a few years, that property will be her final resting place. I still have her favorite printer, the one she used to nap on all the time when she was little. I’m going to be burying her urn on top of it, so she’ll be napping on her favorite printer forever.
I’d like to take the opportunity to thank everyone for their support. It means a lot to us that you guys care, and it’s a big help to me emotionally knowing that you guys are there, and we don’t feel so alone.
The financial support you guys provided in the hopes of saving her was enough for us to give her a dignified and proper farewell, and I’m extremely grateful for that. I would have been even more of an absolute wreck if we’d had to dispose of her or leave her behind on some rental property, but you guys made it possible for her final resting place to be a far more appropriate one.
I’ll be working on a memorial page for her later today. I think it’ll help me work through this, and it’ll give me a chance to share a little of the happiness and joy that Bug brought into my life.
I really appreciate all the comments from you guys in the previous post. I can’t overstate that enough. Thank you.
Update: Her memorial page is now up here.
