Weird urges out of the blue…

I normally despise cooking, and if left to my own devices, I’d probably be happy to subsist exclusively on cereal, salad, and sandwiches. I have no idea what came over me last Saturday when I decided, all of a sudden, that I wanted to make homemade bread bowls and fill them with homemade soup.

I found recipes on the Internet for bread bowls and broccoli cheddar soup, tweaked some of the ingredients, and ended up with a surprisingly tasty supper. I figured it was a one-time fluke, but the next day I was still in the mood to cook. I took Mrs E’s beef-and-pork meatloaf recipe and tweaked it slightly with a spicy garlic tomato glaze, prepared a side dish of sliced potatoes seasoned with olive oil and spices, and baked some homemade yeast rolls. The meatloaf and sliced potatoes were good. The yeast rolls needed a bit more salt and butter, but were otherwise satisfactory.

I also baked a couple of homemade pizzas last week. I learned how to proof yeast properly when making the bread bowls and yeast rolls, so I’m planning to experiment with new recipes for pizza dough.

Mrs E was having a craving for fudge earlier in the week, so I found a solid recipe for fudge to serve as a base. I switched the ratio of milk chocolate and semi-sweet chocolate and swapped vanilla extract for peppermint extract, and ended up with a ridiculously rich fudge that had a nice York Peppermint Pattie finish. It was gone pretty quickly. 😆

I also found an interesting recipe for chocolate chip cookies, and those turned out really well when I baked them yesterday. I don’t think I can go back to store-bought cookie dough at this point.

I’ve been saving these recipes and will probably post the best ones here at some point in the near future.
