Editable models

I’ve been getting a *lot* of requests for custom schemes for the Interceptor. Unfortunately for most of the folks requesting extra schemes, I’m not gonna spend the rest of my life doing every single police scheme in the entire world for $2.50. Fortunately for these folks, though, I did make it easier for them to do their own schemes.

It wasn’t easy, but I managed to figure out how to do editable versions of the Brio and Interceptor that supported a lowest-common-denominator subset of the Photoshop file format that any paint package capable of reading PSD files should handle fine. That means you can open them in free paint apps like the GIMP, or inexpensive paint apps like Photoshop Elements or Paint Shop Pro.

As long as you don’t touch the topmost two layers in the PSDs (page frame and texture), you can color all you want or paste logos and stuff into the layers below them. The results won’t be exactly the same as if I did it myself because my normal layer setup is a lot more complex than that, but it’ll come reasonably close-ish, and you won’t have to extract anything from PDFs or do anything more complicated than flood filling or using brush tools.

Chris, You must be the only person in the world that when is fed up with annoying Fans shouts out "Fuck off! I'll give you exactly what you asked and for free on top!"

You are quite a confusing gentleman to me ^_^"

Everyone else's "Awesome" Dial pegs out at 10…The "Mel" Dial always has had an Elebenty setting 🙂 Thanks Chris!

It is the extra bits like this that will keep me buying you modals were ever I can find them!

Chris, I was only joking on my request.

You have gone multiple steps beyond what can be expected again. You didn't have to do this, but you did.

    Thanks

Dude thats really awesome! Can't wait to get some on the table. I'm like a kid in a candy store waiting for something new to buy! Mayhem corporate didn't count because I only build TLX stuff and have only been building that for awhile now. Need to feed the product funnel process over at World works some exlax so we get some new releases!!! Just kidding! I know that you guys are super busy right now with many irons in the fire! You're vehicles are sweet and thats no joke.

Hey, neat! I want to buy that one just to fiddle with making one for Honolulu Police Department.

Some color layers here and there, straight bars and the regular checkered bars… and… hey! UCM2 conversion is viable! 😀

When will the PDF be ready? Will it be sell through WWG? I think WWG only sells PDF and are not interested in PSD but…

Anyway, it is great! I remember discussions in the old forum about how PSD didn't sell much compared to PDF, but here we stand, we the freaks… and we need customizable models 🙂

    Thank you!

PSDs aren't worth selling separately (very few people like to modify their stuff), so they're just included with the PDFs, in the /kitbash directory.

I also only plan to do this for some models, not all of them. The pain-in-the-ass factor increases linearly with pagecount for both me and the customer, so this is something I'm much more likely to do for low-pagecount models, and only where the extra customizability is warranted.

Oh, and I have no clue when any of it will be released, but it'll definitely be after the new storefront goes live.

    Heh. 🙂

Part of me actually kinda likes this kind of structured and disciplined release cycle. Surprisingly enough, it takes a bit of pressure off me, and I love the idea of building a release buffer. I have 2 complete but unreleased models, and I'm over halfway through with a third! (It's a Boring Sedan and there's a list of color schemes a mile long. Taxi, patrol car (it has 4 doors, and you can't exactly toss a perp in the back of a 2-door Interceptor), regular sedan (black for livery car services and MiB types, other colors for rentals and private ownership), and so on. I already have a clear vision in my head for a few more vehicles beyond that.

The last time I built up this kind of buffer was in 2007, and that was because I spent a lot of time working out of my backpack and in a corner of the master bedroom during/after the move to Texas.
